Discover What Seminary Has for You, Nov. 19

You might be surprised to learn what a seminary has to offer.

On Friday, November 19, Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) in Indianapolis will hold its annual Explore Seminary Day.

Of course, many people enter CTS intent on earning a Master of Divinity degree, the degree that sets the stage for a career as a minister or chaplain.  However, CTS offers several other programs of study as well.

“We’ve had a significant number of people pursue the Masters in Theological Studies degree because they want a deeper understanding of spirituality,” says Associate Dean and Director of Student Services Mary Harris. “The result is that they can more fully incorporate their beliefs into their secular lives and careers.”

CTS is also known worldwide for its counseling and psychotherapy degree programs. Unlike most graduate programs in the nation, CTS’s counseling center is located on campus so students can complete their coursework, internships and residencies all in one place.

Those who already hold a master’s degree may wish to explore the Doctor of Ministry program at CTS.   “We get a lot of inquiries about our D.Min. Program,” says Harris. “Typically it attracts ministers who feel that completing this degree is the best way to prepare themselves to serve their congregations.”

Harris says a common misperception of seminaries is that they are only for people who want to pursue careers in ministry.  “Try telling that to the attorneys, engineers, artists and educators who are currently enrolled.  Tell it to Joe Hogsett, one of our alumni who was just confirmed as the U.S. Attorney General for the Southern District of Indiana.”

Harris says it is not necessary to live in Indianapolis to attend CTS.  She points out that the seminary has a hospitality residence where commuter students can spend the night for as little as $36 a night.
