Evelyn and Hal Watkins prepare to cut the ribbon on the reading room named in their honor at the Disciples of Christ Historical Society in Nashville, Tenn.

Disciples of Christ Historical Society in Nashville, Tennessee has dedicated the Evelyn and Harold Watkins Reading Room in the Thomas W. Phillips Memorial Archives. The reading room was named for these two Disciples leaders to recognize the many years of service they have given to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Watkins are members of Geist Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Harold Watkins’s most significant ministry was at the Board of Church Extension, where he served as president from 1980 through 1995. He was named a Diplomate of the National City Christian Church Foundation in 2002 and wrote a history of Church Extension in his book Continuity, Conservation, Cutting Edge.

Evelyn Watkins has served throughout the Church as a partner with her husband for decades of ministry. She is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Disciples of Christ Historical Society.

2010 marks the Watkins’s 60th wedding anniversary and the 60th anniversary of Rev. Watkins’s ordination.

The newly remodeled room will serve as a gathering and work space for guests and researchers. The reading room will enrich the experience guests have by also providing an updated guest computer area, complete with printers and a charging station.

In addition to the renovation of the reading room, a timeline of the first two hundred years of the Stone-Campbell movement has been installed in the main hallway. Through this self-guided tour, visitors will now have the opportunity to explore the story of the three streams of Stone-Campbell history from the Cane Ridge Revival to the present day in a new and unique way.
